Brian Dettmer has devices a new medium of expression . Maybe because of the invention of internet or the perhaps the decline in usage of books. He sees the beauty hidden in large sets of vintage encyclopedias, medicine dictionary or rather drab history books.
He chips and carves books into incredible, three dimensional, sculptures. His selective revealing and concealing of the book contents gives the book a new life and meaning. This kind of work demands a lot of hard work and crafting skills.
Dettmer dissects and autopsifies the books making smart choices as to which text or image in the book to disclose and which one to hide under.
He has also sculpts with melted cassettes and records. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Modern Painters, Wired Magazine, The Village Voice and Vogue Italia. He is no doubt one of the finest mixed-media artists. You can view his current and cataloged works on Flickr.
